My cima courses are front-end loaded. Students are taking multiple classes so in order to get and keep their attention, I definately power up the beginning. Even the first day. I put them working in their groups (get them bonded) and on the last day they do a group presentation (a closing of the circle on the content.)

Great thoughts on this subject.

My online courses are often totaly webbased and pre-recorded. This makes it a bit harder to involve participants with questions to grab attention at the beginning and in the end to hold high the most important learnings for them.

In the end I believe only activity, where the learnings are actually used will give a more lasting memory and result.

My initial thought is that it would be more of a per day thing, because I'd think that a lot of smaller pieces would tend to blur together. But then, maybe it would depend on how those pieces were assembled.

I guess a good way to build memorable openings and closings would be to use the 'webbing' technique - basically 'overlapping' course content with new perspectives/applications.

Or, we could borrow techniques from the masters - Doctor Who, Flash Gordon and all the soap operas. The classic would probably be the whodunnit format, but any narrative form understands this.

A question: can you game primacy and recency by making learning more episodic?
